How Common Is The Use of Magnets For Relief?

A 1999 survey of patients who had rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, or fibromyalgia and were seen by rheumatologists reported that 18 percent had used magnets or copper bracelets for natural pain relief, and that this was the second-most-used alternative therapy by these patients, after chiropractic.
One estimate places Americans’ spending on magnets to treat pain at $500 million per year; the worldwide estimate is $5 billion. Many people purchase magnets in stores or over the Internet to use on their own without consulting a health care provider.
The use of magnets for natural pain relief goes back to the third century, when medication as we now know it was non-existent and people creatively made their own poultices with plants, minerals and magnets.
Today, there are many who use natural pain relief methods along with traditional medicine to help their bodies heal and to be able to tolerate discomfort while the healing process is underway. Magnets have been used as analgesics and sleep aids, as many report that swelling is minimized and sleep is maximized with the use of properly-calibrated and body-part specific magnetic products.
More and more people are starting to experiment with magnetic bracelets, necklaces and wraps to relieve physical discomfort.
